Don't Look Down

More fun in Chi Town
9/25/2009

Ok, it's not the Sears Tower anymore. It's the Willis Tower. But no matter what you call it, it's still one of the tallest buildings in the world! And now that they've add the new sky deck, it's a must see on any Chicago tour. You ride the elevator to the top (go on a clear day!) and the views are nothing less than spectacular. But here's the deal - teh new sky deck lets you walk out onto a GLASS FLOOR - so you can see straight down (and all around, too!). Yes, straight down. Not looking down from a window - but STRAIGHT DOWN. If your knees don't buckle, you get a gold star! The first time you walk out there it's mind-boggling; but stand there for 30 seconds and you'll get used to it. Beats any amusement park ride, that's for sure. I loved it! And yes, my knees got a little weak at first.

The Vertical Mile Shopping

9/14/2009

This was supposed to be a whirlwind shopping day. Last days usually are! So we headed for – of course, Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue. Some incredible stores – but I can’t show off Marshall Field’s anymore – since Macy’s bought them out.

Nonetheless, it was 7 stories of vertical bliss – as Water Tower Place has some incredible stores; from bookstores to shoes to clothing to accessories to – well you get the idea. And some mighty impressive restaurants to go along with it; after all, you’ve got to re-energize after all that shopping!

Took a walk down Michigan Avenue – one amazing store after another. I guess that’s why they call it the “magnificent mile.” So we shopped – not until we dropped – but until it was time to head back to the hotel to pack – because this particular Chicago adventure was about to be over.

The Cubbies

9/14/2009

We started off for the famous Walker Brothers Pancake house on Green Bay Road. You’ve never seen an apple pancake like this one – which is why people stand in line for up to an hour to get a table. They’ve been doing this for 40 years – and they’re still lining up like they were giving away gold. But once you taste it you simply won’t ever want to eat anything else for breakfast!

Then it was off for some real Chicago fun. We took the El to Belmont Avenue, and walked down to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play. Of all the baseball fields in America, Wrigley Field is really unique. From the ivy-covered walls in Center Field to the concrete ramps you have to walk to get to your seats, to the guys yelling, “beer here!” walking around the ballpark, it’s an experience you’ll always remember.

The Cubs lost! Oh well, some things never change.

That walk made us hungry – so we headed off for some deep dish Chicago pizza. Just what the travel guide ordered!

What a weekend

9/14/2009

What a weekend! I met a clients at O’Hare who wanted to “eat their way through the city.”. So they got on a plane in Dallas and came up to see the sites and tastes that I’d been talking about.

First stop was Wolfy’s Hot Dogs. J have a thing about hot dogs, and I would eat hot dogs anywhere but Chicago! Wolfy’s has a lot of history for me, because I’ve been eating there since I was 5 years old. Some thing each time – Wolfy’s Special – Vienna hot dog on a poppy seed bun, with mustard, relish and tomatoes – plus celery salt, of course! My clients loved it! I had to promise to stop back on the way to the airport when they left.

Then it was back in the car and off to Navy Pier. Since it was renovated, it’s really a fun place to go. There are the usual tourist type shops, but there are some really fun things to do – for all ages. And the view of the skyline from the middle of Lake Michigan if phenomenal! We took a zillion photos – even some on the Ferris Wheel. I’m not a fan of heights, but this was fun.

We took them to their hotel to rest, then later it’s out to dinner. They wanted to eat their way through Chicago, and I’m going to deliver! Tonight we’re heading to Greek Town for some amazing Greek cuisine. It’s as authentic as it gets!
